The Newport 10K organizers bill the race as fast and flat – and it is. There is one small rise over the highway, and a little downhill back toward the water. The field of more than 1,300 runners gathered on a bright, sunny morning with perfect running temperatures (no arm warmers needed!). This race includes an elite division. The first section of the course is a loop, so mid-pack runners see the elite runners coming out of the loop as they are entering it! The overall winner of the race, who finished just under 30 minutes, is from Annandale, in my part of the state.
This was the 10K championship for open men and women. Nearly 30 teams were entered by local clubs. Rose City fielded a men’s team (placing 12th) and a women’s team (placing 11th). Our runners had a great day on this course – check out the results below. The beer provided by the NJ Beer Company made for a great celebratory toast afterward.
We had a great cheering section in Stephanie Gentile, Anne Grosso, Lynda Olsen and Dave Hoch. John Flanagan took some amazing photos – check out Facebook, the website and the newsletter to see them. Thank you to all our runners and supporters! Some of us capped off the morning with a visit to Koro Koro – a rice ball café owned by the Grosso’s daughter Carrie. Check it out the next time you are in Jersey City!
