Ashenfelter 8K - Last race of the season
The Ashenfelter 8K on Thanksgiving morning is a tradition for many runners, including several RC2 team members. The race has been a team championship for many years, and following the demise of the December 10-mile race, became the last team championship of the season. It’s a great way to start off the holiday – and apparently 3,700 people agree!
The morning kicks off with the Tom Fleming mile, followed by the Ashenfelter 8K. Both races are in honor of famous NJ running icons. Here’s a little info about Horace Ashenfelter: https://www.ashenfelter8k.org/about-horace-ashenfelter/. He won a gold medal at the 1952 Olympics. In addition, the one mile race is run in honor of Tom Fleming: https://www.ashenfelter8k.org/about-tom-fleming/.
The race winds through the neighborhoods of Glen Ridge, and there are always a lot of people on the sidelines to cheer on the runners. Rose City entered two teams: the 60s men came in 9th out of 16 teams and the 40s women came in 14th out of 19 teams.
Thanks to all the RC2 runners who came out to start their Thanksgiving with a little run, and additional thanks to John Flanagan for some great photos.
